ADHD and ADD

ADHD and ADD are a term for behavioral disorders. A behavioral disorder is a collective term for people with attention problems, restlessness, learning disabilities and frequent motor problems. The diagnosis has previously only been associated with children, but several adults have now also been diagnosed. According to the Danish Medicines Agency, within the last ten years there has been a tenfold increase in the number of children and adults who are in medical treatment for ADHD / ADD.

SYMPTOMS

Behavioural disorders usually cause problems in perceiving, interpreting, remembering, planning and orienting oneself. For a child with ADHD / ADD, it can be difficult to concentrate and maintain attention during tasks or play. For example, it can be difficult for the child to follow instructions, receive messages and sit still, as they are often very impulsive and easily distracted. For ADD, there is no external hyperactivity, it occurs in a more introverted form, ie internal hyperactivity in the brain.

TREATMENT IN THE PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM

The diagnosis of children takes place by a clinical assessment with physical and mental examinations. The national guidelines for ADHD / ADD recommend medical treatment as the first choice when it comes to moderate and severe ADHD / ADD. There are different types of medications. The most common type is the so-called central stimulant, where you increase the amount of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. Research has shown that there is a reduced function of these two neurotransmitters in this type of patient.

CAUSES

The cause of ADHD / ADD is dysfunction in certain areas of the brain. This disorder may be hereditary or may have occurred before birth due to the effects of alcohol, tobacco and infections.

NORDIC CLINICS TREATMENT

At Nordic Clinic, we treat children and adults with ADHD / ADD with a focus on the individual’s challenges and biochemistry, regardless of the wording of the diagnosis itself. Emphasis will be placed on identifying the things that trick or aggravate the symptoms.

People with these problems can greatly benefit from a tailored diet guide. ADHD / ADD is related to food intolerance, which is why improvements often occur when excluding too many different foods. Sometimes we use a food intolerance test in the form of a blood test. We know that people with ADHD / ADD may have difficulty breaking down proteins from milk and gluten. It can cause the formation of neuropeptides, which affect the brain. A neuropeptide analysis can determine if neuropeptides are forming that can aggravate the symptoms. Other relevant analyzes that can be of great importance in the treatment of ADHD / ADD are stool samples that state whether the digestion itself works optimally, whether the food is broken down and absorbed, whether there is a lack of good intestinal bacteria or whether there is an overgrowth of fungi, bacteria or parasites.

The treatment provides guidance in nutrition, recipes, supplements, and you will receive useful advice to make everyday life successful with a child on a diet. The recommendations are based on the analysis answers and there will be a strong focus on the child having his or her nutritional needs covered.
